(05-14) 13:42 PDT SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to lay off 5,000 state workers by the end June to help close a budget deficit that could reach $21.3 billion if voters reject budget-related ballot measures on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the plan.
Schwarzenegger plans to send out the layoff notices to state workers by Friday, the source said, and the cuts will be made to some of the 20,000 state workers who received layoff warnings earlier this year.
At 2 p.m. today, the governor is scheduled to unveil two versions of his revised budget plan - one that closes a $21.3 billion gap and one that solves a $15.4 billion gap if voters approve key ballot measures in Tuesday's statewide special election.
